A pet’s mood, behavior, and health are all affected by the food he or she eats. Just as humans are urged to consume a balanced diet, it is recommended that a pet’s food intake contain a certain quantity of food from various food groups. To find out more about what you should and should not be feeding your pet, continue reading:
Feeding Your Dog
Whether wet or dry, the dog food you select should contain chicken meal, turkey meal, bison meal, or venison meal. Look for “whole meat” products which do not contain any internal organs and can be easily digested by your dog. To promote healthy skin and an attractive fur coat, you should also find food containing flaxseed oil. Most dogs should be fed two to three times a day, but puppies need to eat more often and veterinarians recommend different feeding practices for dogs of certain breeds and dogs with health concerns.
Feeding Your Cat
Cats cannot digest dry meat-based products the way most dogs can, which is why wet food diets are recommended for them. Kittens and adult cats require animal fat and fatty acids in order to maintain good health and self-grooming habits. Most cats should be fed twice a day.
Shopping for Pet Food
When buying food for your pet, examine ingredient labels closely. Avoid products containing corn, wheat, and peanut hull, which are of no nutritional value to pets and are in fact allergens for many dogs and cats. Whole meal products, fibrous fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, and fish are generally healthy for and digestible by pets.

Training a puppy to do his business only in designated areas of a backyard or home is a top priority among pet owners, and it is important that dogs master this skill at a young age. Certain approaches to housetraining are more effective than others, so conducting a bit of research before embarking on the housebreaking process can ensure that it will be as easy as possible and that accidents are kept to a minimum.
Spend Time With Your Puppy
It is important that your puppy not be left alone for long periods of time during the housebreaking process. If you cannot stop off at home to let your dog out during lunch, find a pet day care center that looks after puppies. Any time you are with your puppy and think he or she may be about to eliminate, take him or her outside.
Establish a Routine
Develop a regular feeding schedule and stick to it. This will help your pet learn to go at more consistent intervals, allowing you to plan for them. To avoid being woken up in the night by a puppy with a full bladder, pick up your dog’s water dish about three hours before bedtime.
Use Rewards
During the early stages of housetraining, give your pet a treat every time that he or she urinates or defecates outside. As the behavior occurs more consistently, you can ease up on the treat giving but not on words of appreciation and encouragement. Remember, until your dog is housetrained, it feels natural for him or her to eliminate waste wherever he or she is when the urge arises. Do not punish your pet for doing what feels natural; instead, reward him or her to adhering to the rules of your home.
